Uzbekistan to host human rights forum
The Samarkand Forum on Human Rights will be held in the format of a video conference on 12-13 August 2020. The national key organizer of the Forum is the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan, represented by the National Center for Human Rights. This was reported by the press service of the National Center for Human Rights of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
This is the second in a series of international forums aimed at strengthening international and regional cooperation in the field of human rights.
The first, called the "Asian Forum on Human Rights", was held in Samarkand on 22-23 November 2018. Its participants adopted the Samarkand Declaration on Human Rights, which was approved by the UN General Assembly on February 6, 2019 as a document of the 73rd session of the United Nations.
As a result of the Asian Forum, the importance and necessity of holding this event on a regular basis once every two years was noted.
The main goal of the current Samarkand Forum is to discuss existing international and regional mechanisms to protect and promote the rights of youth, as well as opportunities to improve them.
The agenda also includes a discussion of the role of youth in the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the UN World Program for Human Rights Education.
During the Samarkand Forum, it is also planned to discuss such a fundamentally new document as the draft Convention on the Rights of Youth.
The initiative to develop and adopt the UN International Convention on the Rights of Youth belongs to the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and was proposed by him during the 72nd UN General Assembly.
The Convention is a new document that reflects the specific rights of youth, which are necessary for recognition in the modern world. The presence of an international document of this kind will attract the interest of states in youth issues around the world. And the allocation of individual rights of young people will contribute to the provision of targeted assistance.
